I recently read an article in The HBR List that talked about what really motivated workers. After reading the article I think the answer to the question goes beyond just workers and is inclusive of people in general.

If you are like me and was asked the question, unmistakably the answer would be recognition. Everyone wants to feel like they are appreciated and that the work they do matters. Guess what? The answer is not recognition. According to the article and a multi year study the greatest motivation is progress.

[well]On days when workers have the sense they’re making headway in their jobs, or when they receive support that helps them overcome obstacles, their emotions are most positive and their drive to succeed is at its peak.[/well]

Progress defined by dictionary.com is a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage, advancement in general, growth or development, continuous improvement.

1. People want to grow, develop and have a sense of accomplishment. When this is present the drive to succeed is strong.

Time and energy are two of our greatest resources. Whatever we put our time and energy to must show results even if they are small or motivation will drop to continue on. No one wants to continually put effort forth if they feel don’t see or feel the value in it. Accomplishment brings greater energy.

2. As a manager or leader this is within your control.

You have the ability to effect the events that either facilitate or undermine progress as roadblocks. Are you setting realistic achievable goals? Are you giving encouragement? Are you providing resources for accomplishment to be present? Setting the right culture and atmosphere is vital. Make sure that you are not the obstacle. A team culture where collaboration is present is one of the greatest proponents for growth and accomplishment.

3. Holding back masked as job security is a myth.

As a leader or manager it is so important for your success that you deal with insecurity. Where you want to go you cannot get there alone. Maybe you have arrived at your career destination, you cannot stay there with out the help of others. The best leader or manager realizes that there are probably more talented and creative people on their team and when released to be effective the team will produce greater results. Holding information, resources, indecisiveness and non delegation is a sign of insecurity and will impede progress. This is not job security. Empowerment equals effectiveness. The best job security is to manage and lead your teams well motivating and assisting them to accomplishment-greater results will follow!
