At the core of humanity is the need to be loved and to love. Love takes on different forms. The highest form of love is between two people is to be in a covenant relationship, marriage.

Marriage is about two distinct, diverse people becoming one in heart and spirit, a public and legal joining of souls. Marriage allows a new environment to share lives together, standing together hand-in-hand, embracing your differences. You will find that marriage expands you as individuals, defines you as a couple, and deepens love for one another.

Foundational to everything is love. Love is why God gave His Word, the Bible. Love is the reason that Jesus stepped out of heaven to come to earth to be the perfect sacrifice so that humanity can experience reconciliation with Him; adopted as sons and daughters. Love moves God and God is LOVE. In marriage, love for God must be first and foremost so that love for one another will be pure and lasting.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7 NLT says “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave. Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame. Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it. If a man tried to buy love with all his wealth, his offer would be utterly scorned.”

In this passage, we find four qualities of love and what love is:

1. Love is unyielding.

Unyielding means that love will not bend or break under pressure. Solomon tells us that love is “strong as death.” In marriage, love grows and becomes stronger as a couple experiences life together.

2. Love is intense like the brightest flame.

Light illuminates the darkness and is a carrier of hope. Love is intense and shines its light into the deepest parts of the heart and soul.

3. Love is invincible and unquenchable, even when there are difficulties.

Life is never perfect, and each couple will face hardship. Hardships have a way of strengthening the bond of love.

4. Love is so priceless it can never be bought, only given away.

Love is many things. Most of all it is unyielding, intense, invincible and priceless. God desires marriage to be a place where love can grow and flourish.
