I firmly believe that marriage is the second most important decision you will ever make. When you choose to be married, you are entering into a lifelong covenant relationship with another person. This lifelong covenant relationship has a God-ordained purpose, and it is God’s desire that you experience it as He created it to be. Why not enter into this relationship prepared?

Marriage is good and honorable, and such a relationship should not be entered with a lack of preparation. Through premarital counseling, you get proper biblical understanding—definition, function and purpose—for you to build a marriage as God intended.

Goals of PreMarital Counseling

Premarital counseling should be something that a couple enjoys a process. The couple learns to have an open dialogue with a mediator that helps them learn to deal with different types of circumstances and scenarios. When you are looking for someone or a program to go through before your wedding, here are some goals that should be present:

  • To create a marriage relationship based on a biblical model
  • To establish a quality relationship through productive communication
  • To equip you for a lifelong commitment
  • To create unity and a shared vision for the future

Purpose of PreMarital Counseling

The purpose of premarital counseling is to give a proper biblical understanding of marriage—it’s practice and purpose—equipping you so that you can build your marriage and experience it as God intended.

Building a marriage takes teamwork. It will require you to be flexible, communicate, forgive, and change. Through each of your sessions, you should demonstrate teamwork not only through interactive theological discussion but also through practical application. In addition to the process listed below, there should be additional books and assignments to complete.

Through the process you should:

  • Define marriage: roles, function, and purpose.
  • Bring the quality of relationship through communication: expose the pitfalls of lack of communication.
  • Equip: how to resolve marital conflict, make decisions and develop sexual unity
  • Create unity and a shared vision for the future in finances and child-rearing

God through His Son wants to give you a life of marriage that is active and vigorous, over and above, superior and extraordinary. This will take a total commitment and a total sharing of your total person with another person.

Marriage is a team sport and was not meant to be played alone. As you move forward you must understand that though this relationship will take much work and time—it will also be the most fun and most rewarding relationship that you have apart from your relationship with Christ.
